Soil microorganisms found helpful in controlling tungro virus

a crop infected with tungro virus

Tungro is one of the most damaging and destructive disease for rice in Southeast Asia. If the disease infects the plant at its early stages, it may cause up to 100% yield loss.

Tungro disease is caused by two viruses, the rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV) and rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV). The virus is known to be transmitted by green leaf hopper, (Nephotettix virescens).

Symptoms of tungro disease include: discoloration of the leaf (yellow to orange, beginning from tip and extends to the lower portion of the leaf), delayed flowering (panicles were small and not completely exerted) and stunted growth.

In a study conducted by Dennis Bialen, plant breeding and genetic expert from General Santos City, claimed that he found a cure for tungro virus.

In an interview, Bialen told Worldngayon® that certain microorganism from the soil compacted with plant enzymes can cure tungro virus infected plants up to 15 days.

“Aside from killing the virus, the formulation is also effective in killing green leaf hopper – the vector of tungro virus,” added Mr. Bialen.  He also mentioned that these enzymes help decompose organic matter in the soil thus, beneficial for plant growth and development.

At the moment, his formulation is supported by the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Region XII.

Mr. Bialen was also a farmer consultant and researcher from multi-national agro-chemical companies. For more information please call Mr Bialen at 09099876500 or email him at natures_care_phil@yahoo.com
